Death sentence: A/Ibom judge escapes death from kidnappers
Judge of an Akwa Ibom State High Court, Justice Okon Okon, today escaped death from kidnappers alleged to be from Rivers State.
The kidnappers were said to have attacked him in the court premises in Uyo, immediately after the presiding judge pronounced the death sentence on them, threatening to kill him for sentencing them to death.
It was learnt that the condemned criminals rained abuses on him and also threatened to kill the Akwa Ibom State Government prosecution team.
The condemned criminals were said to have gone berserk, destroying the window of the court-room, and for about an hour refused to leave the courtroom, leading to a pandemonium along Ikot Ekpene Road, where the court is located.
In the ensuing confusion, other courts, lawyers, and litigants scampered for safety. It took the intervention of a detachment of soldiers and Police to rein the criminals in, taking them into a waiting prison van.
The condemned kidnappers, Bernard Efe Ajomaya, Christian Charles Naya, Daniel West and Shedrach Dick Dala had on 19th May, 2015, kidnapped a medical doctor, Dr. Usen Bassey from his clinic, Ini Abasi Clinic in Uyo, and demanded a ransom of N10 million.
They were said to have been arrested on their way back to Rivers State in Ogoni with the international passport and financial documents of the medical doctor, and part of the ransom money.
